VOTER SERVICES - Community Education
LWV empowers voters — Every vote defends our democracy!
Our Voter Services Team, led by Jeanne Hamilton, provides services to educate and engage citizens in the election process, such as:
● Arranges for trained, qualified, and unbiased speakers and other staff for candidate forums and Pro/Con proposition presentations
● Distributes voter information and promotes voter registration
● Encourages access to and participation in the VOTE411 online voter guide
● Engages in activities to Get Out the Vote (GOTV)
● Educates on changes to our voting systems, including fighting suppression
There are four areas of emphasis for the Voter Services Team:
We need league members to volunteer for all these activities - Please tell us what you are interested in doing!
Voter Services Calendar: Activities begin in January and February with voter registration in the schools. In election years, we also may do a joint candidate forum with the Palos Verdes and Torrance Leagues for local candidates for CA State Senate and Assembly. In September and October we are active with Pros and Cons Presentations on ballot propositions and Candidate Forums for local offices.
Voter Registration: The League promotes voter registration at community fairs and at local high schools, both in the classroom and on campus in areas where students assemble.
Candidate Forums: The League hosts candidate forums so that candidates may address the public, answering questions submitted in advance. There are strict guidelines on appropriate practices during candidate forums, including no campaign materials in the room and no “hot seat” questions intended to embarrass a candidate.
Pros and Cons: The League gives "Pros and Cons" presentations that inform the public of the general content of each ballot proposition, including what the supporters and opponents say, and who has provided funding for the campaign.
VOTE411.org is a League of Women Voters service that provides a free website for candidates to input their background information and position on issues. Our role at the local level is to inform local candidates of this service and encourage their participation.
