Our Speaker: Dani Kaiserman, Esq.

​Dani Kaiserman has been a Staff Attorney in the Elder Justice Unit at Bet Tzedek Legal Services in Los Angeles, CA for nine years. Dani represents low-income clients seeking elder abuse remedies, including restraining orders, conservatorships, and advanced planning documents. She specializes in financial elder abuse, assisting victims and educating consumers about financial scams. Dani graduated from UCLA School of Law in May 2015 as a member of the David J. Epstein Program in Public Interest Law and Policy.

​Town Hall on the Federal Judiciary 

A Town Hall on the Federal Judiciary was held Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

The LWVUS Federal Judiciary Study Committee has been hard at work preparing materials for League members to consider as we move toward consensus meetings on the federal judiciary.

To ensure League members are as prepared as possible, we held a Town Hall meeting with leading experts, including Alicia Bannon of the Brennan Center, Thomas Berry of the CATO Institute, and Errin Martin of NVG LLC.

​At LWVUS Convention 2024, delegates voted to proceed with a study to develop a position on the federal judiciary as an essential component of US democracy. The study's purpose includes addressing concerns and clarifying judicial accountability, transparency, independence, and ethics. For additional information about the study, including the study guide, policy papers, timeline, League discussion group, and scope, please visit the League Management Site. This November, California voters will decide on 10 ballot propositions on issues relating to crime, health care, rent control, taxes and bonds.

What are all these measures really about and who supports and opposes them? The League  will present unbiased background information on the Pros and Cons of measures that may be different from what you hear on TV ads.

Legalizing Housing Abundance in California

In recent years the League of Women Voters of California has supported several important bills designed to increase housing production and expand equitable access. Join us to learn more about policies to increase supply, including affordable housing, and how this may impact you.

El Camino College
Warrior Bags
Service Project

The Warrior Pantry is just one of many resources providing vital assistance to those in need at El Camino College.

There is no student housing at El Camino. At any given time, there are 10-15 students homeless or living in their car. These students in particular are allowed to come inside 2-3 times per week to shower. When the student arrives and shows ID, they can select a Warrior Bag of toiletries.

We are collecting 25-30 bags with:

• wash cloth
• shampoo (some bags can also have conditioner)
• toothbrush
• toothpaste
• soap or body wash
• deodorant
• body wet wipes
• chapstick/lip balm
• $10+ gift card from Target or Food For Less

Travel sizes or regular sizes are welcome!

Additional items:

• feminine hygiene products.
• A few bath towels would also be nice, as sometimes the students ask for one.

We prefer donations of complete bags, but if anyone wants to purchase multiples of a single item, please let Laura know.

We had a speaker from the Loyola Law School Project for the Innocent. Loyola’s Project for the Innocent (LPI) is the only wrongful conviction clinic dedicated to serving Los Angeles County, the leader in felony convictions in a state where almost 700 individuals have been proven wrongfully convicted since 1989. LPI works to get those who are languishing in prison for crimes they did not commit out of jail.

Executive Director of Loyola’s Law School Project for the Innocent. Joe Trigilio took over as Executive Director after Laurie Levenson retired this year.

He will be speaking about the organization and the legislative bills they have won in advocating for restorative justice and how to evaluate judges and DA’s who are running for office.

"What's Really Happening on the Border? - Perspectives from the Ground",  presented by LWVUS Immigration Interest Group featured two speakers from humanitarian organizations assisting migrants and asylum seekers on the Southwest border.

Joanna Williams, Executive Director of the Kino Border Initiative, which works to provide accompaniment with dignity to migrants arriving in Nogales, Mexico  and across the border in Nogales, Arizona : https://www.kinoborderinitiative.org/

The LWVUS Immigration Interest Group unites League members from across the country concerned with building  a humane and effective immigration policy, through  both education and advocacy.  We communicate with the national League Advocacy staff to lobby for legislation and to urge executive action where appropriate and supported by LWV positions.  If you want to  participate in future meetings featuring speakers of interest,  please join our LWV Immigration Google group by contacting : Jane Andrews, LWV San Diego jmlandrews@gmail.net

Looking back at 2022
LWVUS 2022 Convention

Our biennial national gathering took place June 23-June 26, 2022 in Denver, CO.

LWVUS Convention Highlights - June 2022

“LWV program” is the education and advocacy platform that we adopt for the next two years at every national Convention to move LWV’s mission forward.
Based on 300 Program Planning survey responses from Leagues around the country, the LWVUS Board recommended retaining all current LWVUS Positions in the areas of Representative Government, International Relations, Natural Resources, and Social Policy.
But there were several other exciting decisions…

Votes that passed:
Bylaw Amendment: Elimination of per member payment (PMP)
To make LWV inviting for all who want to participate.

LWVUS program for 2022 – 2024

• All current LWVUS Positions in the areas of Representative Government, International Relations, Natural Resources, and Social Policy
• NEW emphasis:  Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)
• NEW amendment:  Campaign for Making Democracy Work amendment - Direct election of the President by popular vote.

Positions adopted by concurrence:
Health Care Update, Criminal Justice, Digital Equity 

Resolutions: Reproductive Choice, Immigration Reform, Climate Emergency, DC Statehood, Missing Indigenous People (MMIP)
