Health & Wellness Committee (HWC) Goals for our service area (El Segundo, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Inglewood and Hawthorne):
GOAL ONE. Identify unmet priority needs and gaps in resources specific to health and wellness needs of our Older Americans age 55+ and disabled individuals that reside in our service area.
GOAL TWO. Assist and facilitate with stakeholders and the communities they serve in developing a culturally responsive and sustainable wellness program to meet these needs and gaps.
GOAL THREE. Continue to expand and enrich relationships and partnerships between the LWVBC Health & Wellness Committee and the leadership, stakeholders and residents of our service area.
AARP City Livability Survey – Our “Deep Dive” on Senior Services
In March 2024, the HWC members completed a deep dive into the six cities our League covers (Inglewood, Hawthorne, El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach) to learn about the programs and activities provided for older adults based upon the AARP Livability 7 Metrics (Housing, Neighborhood, Transportation, Environment, Engagement, Health & Opportunity).
Our preliminary report includes key findings, challenges, and areas of excellence about the services provided for Older Adults in our six cities.
We identified five areas for possible education and advocacy:
We created a brochure about Older Adult Programs and Services in the City of Manhattan Beach to hand out at the Manhattan Beach Older Adults Health Fair May 17, 2024. The brochure was updated in September. Copies can be found at the Manhattan Beach Joslyn Center.

We identified five areas for possible education and advocacy:
- improved local transportation for seniors: door to door, not just curb to curb
- more senior housing
- programs that provide social connections
- senior welfare check programs such as El Segundo YANA and Hermosa Beach House Check Programs. (YANA: You Are Not Alone (for seniors) and Homeward Bound Program for seniors with Alzheimer’s disease)
- emergency preparedness plans specifically for seniors (natural hazards such as floods, earthquakes etc.)

The Local Travel Network: Changing the Culture of Mobility in the South Bay
Health & Wellness Committee Meeting
October 25, 2022
October 25, 2022
Find out what the Local Travel Network is all about and when the South Bay Pilot program will start.
Here is a handout from LTN. The South Bay Cities Council of Governments has completed a plan for a proposed Local Travel Network, a safe network of routes to accommodate a growing market of personal zero-emission slow-speed vehicles. The plan, funded by a Caltrans sustainability grant, examines the feasibility of more widespread adoption of a transportation concept known as micromobility, which refers to a range of lightweight vehicles operating at speeds below 25 mph. These include neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs), which appear similar to golf carts, e-scooters, e-bikes, electric skateboards and other personal transportation devices. |

Caring for your emotional well-being is especially important right now, and the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH) is here to help. LACDMH’s newly expanded Help Line (800-854-7771) is free and confidential for all of LA County’s 10 million residents. The county strives to meet the linguistic needs of its diverse communities and offers assistance by providing services in the preferred language.
Callers can be referred to mental health and crisis services through the ACCESS Center (available 24/7), emotional support through the Emotional Support Line and referrals and services for veterans and military family members through the Veterans Line. |
The Health and Wellness Committee is a long-standing group that has contributed many impressive projects, including an educational forum on mental health, as well as a talk on brain health. Now focused assisting those 60+ in Inglewood and Hawthorne, the committee has identified gaps in the system and has begun partnering with several groups to help make all our Beach Cities more livable.

Asking for your help: Volunteers for Westside Pacific Villages
Do you know any groups, churches or organizations in or near Hawthorne who might be a source of volunteers for Westside Pacific Villages (WPV)? The Health & Wellness Committee is partnering with Westside Pacific Villages (WPV) to find volunteers for WPV in Hawthorne. WPV provides a variety of free services so seniors can remain in their homes: driving, friendly visits, errands, tech support, yard work, household chores, walking buddy, minor home repairs, pet care, and more. Volunteers can set their own day, time, frequency and help in whatever ways they choose. Please send your organizational contacts to Harriet Chase at hzchase@roadrunner.com (310) 545-1026. |
AARP staff and volunteers are working throughout the nation to engage and mobilize communities, share expertise, and deliver technical assistance to the towns, cities, counties and states in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities. The work that happens within the network — which is a program within the larger AARP Livable Communities initiative — is hands-on and locally determined and directed. |
